UCSB Sweeps Big West T&F Athlete of the Week Honors
March 17, 2004 - UCSB athletes swept the Big West Track & Field Athlete of the Week Awards announced today by the conference office. Sophomore Amy Haapanen was named Field Athlete of the Week for the second consecutive week, after setting school records and NCAA Regional qualifying marks in the shot put, discus, and hammer. Sophomore sprinter Kylie McCuen was the women's Track Athlete of the Week for her swift 100m (12.27), 200m (24.57w) double at the Ben Brown Invitational on Saturday at Fullerton. Junior Ryan Lockner was tabbed male Field Big West Athlete of the Week for his personal best 53' 0.25" effort in the shot put on Saturday at Fullerton. Junior Jeff Gardina made the announcement a clean sweep for the Gauchos as the men's Track AOW with his lifetime best and #10 All-time at UCSB mark of 14:24.80 in the 5,000m, Saturday night at Fullerton.

So far in 2004 Gaucho women have set 4 NCAA Regional qualifying marks and met 24 Big West qualifying standards. The Gaucho men have achieved 18 conference qualifiers in '04. Gaucho athletes lead the Big West in 11 events after the first two weeks of action.

UCSB Track & Field will split the squad this weekend and travel to both the Baldy Castillo Invitational at Arizona State and the Cal Poly Invitational at San Luis Obispo.
