The latest issue of the Santa Barbara Independent featured a great article by John Zant on the record setting year the Gauchos have been having.

http://www.independent.com/news/2010/may/13/track-and-field-record-setters/

Excerpt…

How does a team keep performing at a high level when it’s always playing on the road? UCSB’s track-and-field athletes succeed by whipping up a home-like atmosphere wherever they are.

“It’s ridiculous how much our team cheers,” Gaucho high-jumper Jane Doolittle said. “We start every meet with an ‘Olé’ cheer and take it from there. Our track team is more tight-knit than any other team in the Big West.”

Inspired by each other, the Gauchos have done serious damage to the school record book. They have achieved eight new milestones at meets all over the state this spring. In each of the last six weekends, at least one UCSB record has been broken. They hope to keep that streak going Friday and Saturday (May 14-15) at the Big West Conference Championships at Cal State Northridge.

It’s been an unbelievable year for the Gauchos. In case you’ve missed it, new school records have been set almost every week and Barbara Nwaba kicked off the Big West Championships by scoring 5,552 points in the Heptathlon. She’s improved the school record by over 500 pts in 2010 and is currently ranked 5th in the NCAA. Nwaba joins 6 other Gauchos ranked in the Top 25 in NCAA’s this year.

Stay tuned for a “what to look for” preview of Big West & NCAA’s.
